Building a Strong Brand: Align the Points of Touch

One of the simplest ways to build a strong brand is to make sure that every point of contact that prospects and customers have with your company reinforces the brand promise. Although relatively simple in theory, "touch-point alignment" often proves difficult in practice. Consistently reinforcing your brand requires discipline, focus and commitment.

When asked to identify a company's brand touch points, most people point to the obvious, such as logos and advertisements. In fact, people often think of the logo as the brand and advertising as the primary way to build the brand. In reality, the concept of brand touch points encompasses far more than these basic visual cues. Every point of contact your prospects and customers have with your company and its products and services provides an opportunity to build your brand - or weaken it. How you manage those points of contact determines the relative strength or weakness of your brand.

Every company has an internal and external brand experience, and each plays an important role in developing your overall brand. Picture a massive iceberg floating in the Northern Atlantic. The visible portion poking its head above the ocean's surface represents a small fraction of the iceberg's full mass. Similarly, only a small portion of your company's brand experience - the external part - is highly visible. Much more of your brand lies below the surface and is not as easily recognizable.

A Case in Point

To illustrate our point, let's look at an extreme example - IBM. For much of its history, IBM had one of the strongest brands in corporate America, arguably in the entire world. By the early 1990s, however, the company's branding and advertising systems had fallen into a state of chaos. When Lou Gerstener took over as CEO in 1993, he quickly realized that reviving and clarifying the IBM brand was one of his highest priorities.

At the time of Gerstener's arrival, IBM had more than 70 different ad agencies representing the firm. Each worked with a different product manager, with no central coordination or oversight. A single issue of an industry trade magazine could have up to 18 different IBM ads with 18 different designs, messages, and even logos. The company had hundreds of product brochures, each different enough that it was virtually impossible to tell that they came from the same company. Gerstener likened the situation to "70 little trumpets all tooting simultaneously for attention."

To wrest control of IBM's messaging from his country managers, Gerstener brought 35 of them to a conference center in Palisades, New York. He plastered the walls with IBM's widely disparate advertising, packaging and marketing collateral, creating a veritable train wreck of brand and product positioning. At the end of his presentation, Gerstener posed one question: "Does anyone doubt we can do this better?" Unanimously, the team decided to consolidate IBM's 70+ advertising relationships into a single global agency. From that point forward, all of IBM's marketing reinforced one basic positioning message: IBM as global, world-class integrator. The rest is history.

A Question to Ponder and an Exercise

What if you conducted an exercise at your company similar to Gerstener's branding exercise at IBM? What if you took every one of your company's brand touch points and spread them across your conference room? Use the following list of touch points to start the process:

However, the reality is that a brand consists of a lot more than a logo, and there are many ways to build a brand. The key is to identify the touch points of your brand and make sure they are aligned with your brand promise. The more consistency you have across your various touch points, the stronger your brand will be.

Lapsed Donors: How to Write a Fundraising Letter That Wins Them Back

Your definition may differ, but I define a lapsed donor as someone who has not donated to your organization within the last year, two years or three years. Donors who have not sent you a gift in over three years are not lapsed donors. They are former donors.

Lapsed donors are valuable. Unlike strangers, they have supported you before. And they believe in your mission enough to have sent you a gift (or gifts). That means they are worth mailing to. You can expect to receive an 11 percent response rate from a mailing to lapsed donors if your results are typical, says fundraising expert Kent Dove (Conducting a Successful Fundraising Program. Jossey-Bass, 2001).

Here are some tips on writing an appeal letter that will win them back. In the fund development profession, the letter you write is called a recovery letter because it aims to recover donors who have lapsed.

1. Write to one person

You will likely not know why each donor has lapsed. Donors stop giving for any number of reasons. Some forget. Some lose interest. Some get distracted with the arrival of children--or grandchildren. Others decide they do not like your new executive director's ties. Each donor is an individual, and the way to win each one back is to send a warm, sincere, personal letter from your heart to theirs.

2. Say "we miss you"

What you are trying to communicate in your letter is that you miss the donor more than their donations, which should always be true. You have lost a supporter first, and a source of support second. So write your letter in such a way that you show your concern for the person. Here are some lines to use:

We have not heard from you since March 2004. We miss you! We are counting on your renewed support this year for . . . We miss you. We miss your moral support, and we miss your financial support. We sure have missed hearing from you these last few years. 3. Invite the donor to come back

Provide a tangible way for the donor to renew support. Ask for a gift toward a particular project. Offer a subscription to your free newsletter. Do something to involve the donor and make them take action.

4. Customize your appeal

Whenever possible, customize your recovery letter to the unique circumstances of each lapsed donor. For example, if you know from your database that a donor only sent a gift once a year at Christmas, mention that in your letter. Or if another donor supported only one area of your work, mention that. The more that your letter appeals to the interests of your donors, the more likely you are to recover them. Here's an example:

"The last time we heard from you, you had generously responded to the humanitarian crisis in Honduras. You sent us a gift that helped us meet the immediate needs of that emergency. Today, I am writing to you because I think you can help us overcome another crisis."

5. Match your language to the length of lapse

Statistically speaking, the longer you've had to wait for a gift, the less likely you are to receive one. That means you should segment your database into groups of 12-, 24- and 36-month lapsed donors (or another criteria that you use), and send each group a slightly different appeal. To a donor who has not given in a year, for example, you can say, "We miss you." To the donor who has not sent a gift in three years, you can say, "You have supported us in the past. Your gifts made a difference. I urge you to renew your commitment by sending a gift today." The idea is to be casual with the new lapsed donors and progressively more vigorous with donors who have not given in two or more years. Some examples:

12-month lapsed

"Your financial support in 2001 made a difference. Your gift at the end of this year will have a positive impact on the people, which in turn will lead to better health, hope and confidence for humanity."

24-month lapsed

"Your financial support in recent years was a great help to us. Now I'd like you to renew your support by joining with me and the volunteers at . . ."

36-month lapsed

"We have not heard from you for quite sometime and yet your past support has made a difference for populations in danger. I think you can help us overcome this crisis."

6. Tailor your ask

Some of your lapsed donors will have given once and never again. Others will have given faithfully each month for years. Each donor demands a different letter. The more faithful your donor has been, the more that donor requires a personalized letter with a personalized ask amount. In other words, don't take the easy way out and ask a one-time donor and a 10-year supporter for the same amount, treating each one the same way. You could ask the one-time donor for a gift that's the same size as their last one. And you could ask the long-time supporter for a gift that's the same size as their smallest one, or their average gift over time, or their last one, and so on. I'll leave the decision to you.

7. Win back their hearts and minds

Lapsed donors need to be persuaded again to support your mission. You'll need to re-state your case for support, and address any reasons you know of for donors stopping their support.

The two most important things to say in a recovery letter are that you miss the donor and that their support made a big difference in the lives of the people your organization serves. "A carefully crafted appeal that lets past donors know they are important, appreciated and missed almost always produces a net income," says Stanley Weinstein (The Complete Guide to Fundraising Management).

Lymphoma Cancer Survival Rate - Is There a New Cure?

The lymphoma cancer survival rate depends greatly on many factors. Typically, the survival rate is given in percentages during time frames. That is not an accurate prognosis, and you shouldn't be looking at it. Research is constantly conducted in the field of lymphoma and currently there is a very effective new way to put the cancer in remission.

The survival rate depends on the type of lymphoma. On average, 50% of lymphoma patients get cure, either by chemotherapy, or by spontaneous remission. Since now we have the new natural treatment option, the future survival rate of lymphoma patients will depend largely on how many people learn about the new treatment option. Chemotherapy has many side effects, and is generally speaking ineffective for treating lymphoma cancer. The lymphoma is one of the slowest spreading cancers, but it is also the one with the most profound symptoms, which makes it extremely difficult to live with.

Statistics show that most patients get cured of lymphoma cancer during their 4th-7th year of being sick. Now we know that the reason for that is spontaneous remission. We also know that 'spontaneous' is synonymic for 'idiopathic'. That means that the person usually did something very specific to rid themselves of the cancer, they are just not aware of it. Lymphoma gets cured by the body, and it is the only mechanism in existence, that can cure cancer. External intrusive procedures do not work. In rare cases, surgery can be done to remove cancerous tumors, but that is not effective when it comes to lymphoma. Generally speaking, the information on cancer is very controversial, because medical companies are trying to promote their products, which rarely work and often require daily administration. That is an effective business model, but the end result is nonexistent and people keep living with the cancer.

One of the most useful things is looking at stories of people who suffered from lymphoma, but got cured without apparent reason. When you look at countless such cases, certain patterns emerge and that can be used as the base of a new cure. That is exactly what researchers recently did, and its the reason why the melanoma cancer survival rate depends mostly on how informed people are of the new cures that can be used.

UFOs: The Sceptics, The Scientists, And The Double Standards

The UFO Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (ETH) can't be therefore it isn't; alright it might be but it still isn't; don't bother me with facts, my mind is made up; and in any event it's all pseudoscience and I just deal with real science. Trust me on this - I'm a scientist! And we all know scientists are 100% rational and right 100% of the time!

Many professional scientists, and other sceptics, when and if they think about UFOs at all, have been preconditioned to think of them in terms of the lunatic fringe, nutters who accept any and all pseudoscience associated with the paranormal and therefore not worthy of their attention, or if worthy, then worthy in a negative sense as only something to ridicule. They like to in a sense 'pour water on a drowning man' and pat themselves on the back as how superior they are relative to the astrology-minded; the great unwashed set who believe dinosaurs and humans coexisted together.

Firstly, let's dispose of the sceptics, professional and otherwise, since their double standard amounts to treating all pseudoscience or all paranormal topics equally. Actually therefore sceptics only have a single standard - no shades of grey. One size fits all. That is to say, no matter what the anomaly, it's rubbish. Sceptics just lump together all that's paranormal, and call it pseudoscience as any sceptics' website or monograph will more than adequately demonstrate - all pseudoscience is nonsense and all = all. However, I suggest that instead of all anomalies being equal; some anomalies are more equal than others. In short, some anomalies are really bovine fertiliser, but hardly all. To lump astrology and UFOs in the same basket is a double standard, since the theoretical and observational evidence for each isn't really equal. Likewise, there's more theoretical and actual evidence for the existence of the Sasquatch (Bigfoot) than there is for say telepathy. Since sceptics can't distinguish serious anomalies from trivial ones, well I can't treat sceptics seriously since when crunch comes to the crunch, they can't be bothered to do the proper research and make distinctions.

Scientists on the other hand should take everything on their individual merits, and clearly in any scientific field, not all topics have equal merits. Saying life exists on Mars is not in the same league as saying life exists on Venus. Despite that, some topics do have equal merits, but that doesn't stop scientists from pretending they don't. Take SETI for example.

SETI (that's the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) scientists tend to poo-poo ufology buffs for failing to come up with a UFO ETH (extraterrestrial hypothesis) smoking gun, or any compelling evidence, especially physical evidence for hardcore UFOs, in over six decades. That's one topic. Of course they conveniently forget that SETI is entirely based on theory and SETI hasn't produced a smoking gun conclusive of the existence of ETI either, over a near equal five decades of searching. But that's another topic. However, both topics are in fact equal in that neither has produced a smoking gun that's 'killed' the alien and provided a corpse for study. In fact, the amount of SETI evidence, including physical evidence, is but a short story compared to the full length UFO novel.

There is one other up-close-and-personal reason SETI scientists dump on the UFO ETH and/or 'ancient astronauts' is because they have a vested interest in SETI. They have spent careers, building equipment designed to look for alien intelligence out there, often been made fun of by other scientists (and the American Congress) in their hunt for 'little green men'. It would be a serious blow to their egos, careers, reputations and an actual downright embarrassment if ET proven to be down here all along. So, it's almost a natural reaction to rubbish any alternative idea. We've seen that any number of times in the history of science - Darwinian evolution vs. Lamarckian evolution; the Big Bang cosmology vs. the Steady State cosmology; catastrophism vs. uniformitarianism in geology. Debates have often been controversial, personal and bitter. So it's interesting to note that when I communicate some of my unorthodox ideas to a well known SETI scientist, if I get under his skin, at worst I get no response; at best one that starts with "Dear Mr. Prytz". Now if I say something he considers sensible (by his standards) the reply is "Dear John". That's a bit of a double standard too in its own right.

Now when it comes to SETI vs. the UFO ETH, that's not to say SETI scientists shouldn't continue to do SETI - they should - nothing ventured, nothing gained. But it gains them nothing to reject out of hand the rival idea that ET is or was down here are well as being up there.

Quite apart from SETI, the majority of scientists, especially physical scientists, usually poo-poo the UFO ETH with a there's 'no evidence' mantra. But such scientists leave themselves wide open to the double standard. Many a scientist will profess a firm belief in something that has absolutely 'no evidence' of any kind, conveniently forgetting that they have rubbished other people's beliefs for having faith in six impossible things that appear on their dining room table prior to breakfast. And so we see here the beginnings of more general double standards.

A prime example of how some scientists have their lack of evidence and belief too is with respect to religion. Even as recently as 2009, a public opinion poll found that a significant (albeit minority) percentage of scientists had a belief in a God that was up close and personal in their lives. There's not the slightest bit of evidence, physical or otherwise, that God exists. There's absolutely no evidence for any deity (monotheistic or polytheistic), yet many scientists have no trouble accepting on faith and having a belief in a deity (or deities) sight unseen by anyone and everyone. No one verifiable has seen the monotheistic deity God and all the polytheistic deities are apparently, according to scholars, entirely mythological. Go figure. This essay could just as easily been constructed around a theme of double standards with respect to God: Show Me the Evidence!' There just isn't any.

That reminds me of God's double standard of 'do as I say, not as I do'. It's just like God (of the Old Testament) to command "Thou shall not kill" while He goes off and nearly exterminates the entire terrestrial human and animal population vis-à-vis the universal deluge. Anyway, back to the scientist.

There are valid cases within science itself of scientists not only 'having a lack of evidence for X's reality but never-the-less a belief in X's reality too'. Now without meaning to accuse scientists of pure hypocrisy, there are lots of current concepts in science that have absolutely no evidence of any sort apart from the purely theoretical to support them, yet are taken quite seriously by physical scientists. A partial list would include concepts like the Multiverse (there is more than one universe - ours - within the overriding cosmos); the Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum physics; particle physic's string theory; the Higgs Boson; the possible existence of ten or eleven dimensions; the Ekpyrotic (two string theory [mem]branes colliding and accounting for the origin of our) Universe theory; and, shock-horror for those interested in SETI, the total lack of any under-the-microscope, hardcore evidence whatsoever for any intelligent life forms anywhere out there other than intelligent terrestrial life forms (humans). Yet it is acceptable for scientists to research these areas without being subjected to having their sanity questioned. I fail to see why the UFO ETH is an exception to this. Even forget the UFO ETH - just the UFO phenomena full-stop is off-limits. Be that as it may, it is.

Understandably for scientists, there is one very big and fundamental problem with UFOs. They tend to be unpredictable in time and space, and when they do show up; they don't stand still and grant you an interview and allow you the leisure of taking out your yardstick or whatever other scientific instrument you care to name and measuring them.

But there are other case histories from the annals of science regarding 'the nature of the evidence' that have parallels with UFOs - physical phenomena that are unpredictable in time and space, that don't stand still; that you can't poke and prod, and that you can not put under the microscope and, examine at your leisure. These various phenomena; well ball lightning comes to mind; ditto Transient Lunar Phenomena (TLP); and you can't rewind the clock and prepare for (instruments at the ready) and witness the one-off Tunguska event are akin to UFOs in that scientists lack the means to lock them down, isolate them, and study the unfolding event at their leisure. Yet, it is one rule for one (ball lightning, TLP, Tunguska); one rule for another (UFOs).

So there seems to be a double standard for acceptable evidence here. UFOs have apparently no verifiable evidence and a 'giggle factor'; ball lightning and TLP have unverifiable evidence but no 'giggle factor', yet all of these have theoretical underpinnings that make their existence plausible. In the case of the UFO ETH, it's the Fermi Paradox - that's the 'where are they, if they exist they should be here' observation.

Ultimately the question here boils down to finding an answer (a smoking gun) to the question that humans have asked and speculated on for thousands of years - are we alone in the universe? There shouldn't be any double standards employed when it comes down to addressing this issue. There are ultimately four choices: 1) We can choose not to answer the question because the world has bigger priorities than proving the existence of 'little green men'; 2) we can, as SETI does, search out there, which obviously is a very logical thing to do even though it's a proverbial 'needle in the haystack' search; 3) we can search down here - ancient astronauts and UFOs - which is a positive in that it restricts the haystack's geography required to be examined, but on probability is less likely statistically that the needle will be there (another parallel being someone looking for a lost key underneath the lamppost just because the light's better there); 4) or we can do both - search out there AND search down here and not put our quest for the 'little green men' into an either/or basket. Unfortunately, that's way too idealistic a position to have accepted given the historical double standard already taken.

In conclusion, when it comes to the scientific community and evidence, there is often a double standard employed. There's not one shred of physical evidence for string theory, yet it's an accepted area of funded academic research and has been for decades. On the UFO issue, many scientists while happy to accept the accuracy of eyewitness testimony when it provides data that turns a UFO event into an IFO, for some strange reason reject eyewitness testimony when it reinforces the unidentified or unknown status of the UFO event. That's another double standard. Go figure!

Of course the ultimate conclusion to be drawn is that scientists are human too and have their own agendas, backgrounds and personalities which can and do colour their belief systems. Apart from the ever logical Mr. Spock, is there any human, past or present (and probably future) who hasn't at one time or other employed a double standard? Not that that makes the double standard acceptable of course, but theoretical idealism and practical reality is two very separate things.

So, IMHO, the double standard fails because though sceptics and scientists rally against the UFO ETH, and perhaps they are right in their conclusions, skeptics and scientists aren't all-knowing and often base their conclusions on faith or belief. They too are human with all the accompanying baggage that implies and they can, and do, make mistakes, and such is the case I believe when it comes to labeling the pro UFO ETH a pseudoscience. Once upon a time Galileo Galilei and Nicolaus Copernicus would have been considered pseudo-astronomers; Heinrich Schliemann (of Troy fame) someone who dabbled in pseudo-archaeology; Charles Darwin was a pseudo-naturalist; and Alfred Wegener, obviously put forth a theory (continental drift) that could only be described as pseudo-geology at the time. Even originally Albert Einstein was so far out in left field that his scientific seniors and superiors could easily have described his physics as pseudo-physics. Only time and history will be the judge whether or not the UFO ETH is or was pseudoscience or real science. The jury IMHO is still out on that issue.

Premature Ejaculation

Definition of Premature Ejaculation:

Most men have experienced the problem of premature ejaculation at some time in their life. Premature ejaculation is one of the most common sexual problems. Premature ejaculation is explained as a condition where in a person is unable to delay ejaculation to a point when it is mutually desirable for both the partners. That means ejaculation occurs before a man wants it to happen. Some men ejaculate during foreplay while some do so at the very entry itself.

But few men feel that 5 or 10 minutes time to have orgasm is not enough and they feel that this is also premature ejaculation. This suggests premature ejaculation is most likely psychological in origin than physiological. The exact cause of premature ejaculation is still unknown.

Ayurveda has said Kshiprumunchati Shukram....... this means the person will have Premature ejaculation when vata in his body aggravates and leads to a very quick ejaculation of shukra (semen).

The probable causes for premature ejaculation:

o Anxiety during the first experience of sex. Some men will develop a longer-term anxiety toward sex, which can cause a prolonged experience with premature ejaculation.

o A long period of abstinence from sex.

o Younger men tend to ejaculate more quickly than older men, as experience seems to be associated with ejaculatory control.

o Depression or anxiety about poor sexual performance

o Anxiety due to anticipation of Rejection by partner.

o Anticipation of failure to satisfy his partner

o Anticipation of pain

o Adverse experiences with sex in childhood

o Religious beliefs

o Financial burdens

o Job stress

o Relationship problems

o Side effects of some prescription drugs

Apart from psychological causes some physiological causes like inflammation of prostate gland or spinal chord problems may cause premature ejaculation.

According to ayurveda when vayu gets vitiated it causes premature ejaculation. The following causes vitiates vata

o Consuming stale, spicy, cold and junk food (Men who are away from home on business mostly consume this sort of food )

o staying up for long hours at night .

o long gap between meals

o Controlling natural urges (this happens during long corporate meetings)

o Physical and mental exertion.

o Under nourishment due to worries and grief

o Sitting for long hours in uncomfortable chairs.

o Traveling at high speeds.

Prevention:

o Seek psychotherapy to maintain a healthy attitude towards sex.

o Do not blame yourself for premature ejaculation. Anybody can experience premature ejaculation.

o Speak openly with your partners to avoid misunderstanding and miscommunication.

o Use some relaxation techniques to reduce stress.

o Have full knowledge about sex

o Try to minimize the above said causative factors.

Simple Remedies

Many techniques are used to control premature ejaculation. "The squeeze technique" is popular and effective amongst all. Squeeze technique is a behavioral therapy. If a man senses that he is about to experience premature ejaculation, he interrupts sexual relations. Then the man or his partner squeezes the shaft of his penis between a thumb and two fingers applying gentle pressure just below the head of the penis for 20 seconds. And then sexual relations can be resumed. The technique can be repeated as often as necessary. When this technique is successful, it enables the man to learn to delay ejaculation with the squeeze, and eventually, to gain control over ejaculation without the squeeze.

The Masters & Johnson method:

o The best way to combat premature ejaculation is by learning to control the sensations prior to orgasm. This method takes time and practice, but it is very effective.

o First you need to bring yourself close to orgasm (this can be done via masturbation, without the involvement of your partner) and then stop and relax before recommencing. Each time you need to bring yourself closer to orgasm until finally you cannot control it. If you do this often enough, you will learn where your point of climax is. This is helpful when interacting with your partner.

o You will need to practice reaching your climax point with your partner by engaging in non-penetrative sex so that when you feel it is near, you signal them to stop and you allow your erection to subside. This also needs to be repeated so that you and your partner are familiar with the procedure.

o Once you feel you are ready for intercourse, it is best to start by lying on your back so that you can guide your partner during penetration. When you are near orgasm, give your partner a signal to stop and you should relax and start again. Once you get the hang of it (it may take several weeks or months), premature ejaculation shouldn't be too much of a problem.

o A variant of this method involves the partner squeezing the tip of the penis just before orgasm ("squeeze technique"). This pushes blood out of the penis and reduces the erection.
